The popular heartburn medication, Nexium, is being recalled by North Carolina-based Apotex Corp. for alleged overprescription.
The U. S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that it is reviewing the recall.
The drugmaker said it will immediately suspend the sale of its drug store, which is located at 1006 North Pinehurst Road in the southeastern part of the state.
The drugmaker said it will submit to an independent regulatory agency, the FDA, a "good cause" report and a "good cause" report to the Food and Drug Administration.
"The FDA is reviewing the FDA's investigation and will assess the information and determine whether Apotex is in compliance with its obligations under the FDA's regulations," FDA spokeswoman Lyndsay Meyer said in a statement.
Nexium is used to treat frequent heartburn and stomach problems and is used to prevent ulcers, a common symptom of Crohn's disease.
"The FDA's review of this product should conclude there is a risk to the health of consumers," the statement said.
Apotex said it was recalling the store for an estimated $3.3 million. The recall is likely to be posted by Novartis Inc. on Nov. 3, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
The recall is the product's second recall since 2004, when Apotex reported a second case of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
The company said in a statement that it is voluntarily recalling all the pharmacies in the area. The agency said it will consider the information as it had before it began its investigation.
In addition to the overprescription and other safety concerns, the FDA said the recall is also likely to cause injury.
"As a result of this recall Apotex's safety and efficacy are being adversely affected by the product," FDA Commissioner Janet F. Rea said.
In May, FDA released a warning that warned consumers not to eat or drink certain types of food while taking the drug. Consumers who have been advised of the warning by a doctor are encouraged to consult with their doctor before taking the drug.
In a statement, Apotex said, "We are committed to maintaining the highest standard of patient safety and providing effective and safe product administration to patients and their physicians."
